How do we watch TV today?

·        Watching TV on internet
Habits on watching TV have changed very much. One of the most significant change is online TV. Internet television allows the users to choose the content or the television show they want to watch.
And many other advantages, as skipping commercials, control and save our time.
Some data: 145 million people watch video online in the U.S., compared to about 290 million who watch traditional TV. So the penetration of online video is already about half of the overall TV-watching population.

The top 5 video sites by unique visitors are YouTube, Vevo, Yahoo, Facebook, and MSN. But the top 5 video sites by time spent are Netflix, YouTube, Tudou, Hulu, and Megavideo.
YouTube, the original video-sharing website, became famous for water-skiing squirrels and bedroom musicians. It still has plenty of those, but since  2009 it has also had a “TV shows” section.
Other technology outfits are learning to become more like television.
Although it is easier than ever to watch programes at a time you want and on a device you choosing, nearly all TV is nonetheless watched live on a television set. Nielsen estimates Americans spend an average of 32 hours and 47 minutes a week watching traditional TV. They only spend an average of 3 hours and 58 minutes a week on the Internet, and only 27 minutes a week watching video online. All those billions of videos watched online still only represent 1.4 percent of the time spent watching traditional TV.
When thinking about it, I thought one of reasons might be, that watching on-line TV you can skip all commercials and other parts of the show where you are not interested, unlike on traditional TV, where you have to watch all that they want you to watch.
Even with possibility that allows for easy recording of programmes, almost 85% of television shows are viewed at the time the broadcasters see fit to air them. “People want to watch ‘Pop Idol' when everyone else is watching it”

·         Multi-Screenism

Consumers’ use of mobile devices while watching TV is very popular now.
Viewers are using mobile devices as smartphones, tablets and laptops to accompany television with alternative-format material, like contextual text information, social discussion, votes and games.
Recent Deloitte research showed the second screen is most often used for social discussion of TV shows, not for finding additional information about them.
But the research does not always prove an appetite for further information on those separate screens. Many viewers may be multi-tasking, distracting themselves from TV with email, Facebook and other tasks.

·Key factors that determine the future of TV
Interactivity. Social TV
Tv is becoming more social. In the past few years viewers have gained much more control over television.
Social TV not only has the potential to put the user in control over the what, when and how they consume TV, but it also allows users to collaboratively define and share their experience.
Interactive TV (iTV) is any television with what is called a “return path”. Information flows not only from broadcaster to viewer, but also back from viewer to broadcaster. Another feature common to all iTV systems is the ability to offer each TV set, or each viewer who uses that TV set, a different choice of content.

Innovation

Google TV

“As well as making it easier to find stuff to watch from your existing TV service, Google TV enhances the TV you’re used to with over 100,000 movies and TV episodes on demand, thousands of YouTube channels, apps, & more content coming all the time.”
o   “Zeebox”
Zeebox is a real-time system for social TV viewing and for engaging deeply around those shows that depends on recognising sofa-based second screens as the place for innovation.
Zeebox has gained more plaudits than many for testing the second-screen waters. Its app includes social discussion of TV shows, a channel-changing EPG, live information about on-screen dialogue, e-commerce links and a HTML framework with which broadcasters or producers can create their own in-app viewer engagement modules for use during their shows.

o   “Netflix”

Netflix is an American provider of on-demand Internet streaming media in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and flat rate DVD-by-mail in the United States.

It is streamed over the internet- can watch on all devices with internet.

Culture and TV

I want to refer to the differences of the TV shows between countries and different cultures.
It is very easy to reflect on cultural character of countries from their TV shows.
For example, the fashion, attitude, joking, entertainer, languages.

[America]
Many kind of new TV shows are invented in America, and they have almost 18,000 channels.
American people´s character is talkative and they are assertive, dynamic and they are opened for new experiences.
As a result, in American TV shows, are used sarcastic jokes about the society and government.
Screenshots from talk show "ellen" represents American TV show interface, the image is simple and refined.
They have a lot of channels for kid age to elderly.
One of the channel don´t use censorship at all. Existence of such kind of channels shows American specific open society.

[Mexico]
Mexican people are cheerful, gaiety and passionate.
In Mexico the soap opera is popular. In this show, they dance and show their feelings openly.
This is one of the scene of Mexican soap opera, as you can see, the actor perform emotionally.

[Kenya]
Even though people still live in tribes, it´s considered to be on international country.
They have many kind of TV shows.
Not only Kenyan TV show but Indian, American, and religion channel.
They are christian and Muslim there.
Mainly, there are 2 kinds of religion channels.
Interestingly, their official languages are English and Swahili.
Both languages are used in TV show,
but they don´t show subtitles even if one language is used in it.
Kenyan people love joking and dancing.
Comedy is very popular in kenya.

[India]
in India are used almost 800 dialects. official language is Hindi and English is second official language. Overall there are used 9 languages in the TV,
but, hindi´s show has high audience rating than English.
they watch soap opera same as Mexico.
but, in India, they have "bolly wood" movie.
bolly wood is Hindi language film industry in "mumbai", what is musical show.

This is Indian cricket. In India, there is "Indian premium league",
Indian people are interested in cricket. and audience rating is the highest.
Many companies invest a lot of money as a sponsor fee.

[Russia]
In Russia are 10 time zones.
Russian TV station adjust the time depend on the past of the Russia.
They have 2 Russian "government controlled TV station" mainly.
And information is changed by government.
That`s why now young people get information through the Internet.
Some Russian TV shows are similar to American style shows.
In Russia, they ask the intellectual pleasure to TV.
So they watch TV shows to get new information.
Cooking show, cultural TV show, news is popular as well.
Quite offen Russian artistic sense is shown even in weather forecast.

[Japan]
Japanese TV shows are very unique.
Japan is very domestic.
Getting new culture from another country is hard because
Japan is island so Japanese people are not interesting in another country so much.
That`s why we don`t have international news that much.
And we don`t admire special religion so we don`t have religious channel.
This is Japanese TV show. As you can see, it has many text and ir is very colorful. There is cultural background of it.
Japanese people communicate with text and image.
We use the text or image for lack of mutual understanding.
So, bright color and a lot of text are for appeal to audience.
Character of Japanese people are tend to be diligent.
Commercial about "soft candy" - these girls are very popular idol of Japanese.
When it was broadcasted, many people made protest to the TV station.
It shows their character.

[Australia]
Australia is very multi cultural country.
They speak English, so they import many American shows.
Originally, many British people moved to Australia because of historical reasons. That is  why in Austalia is traditional British culture.
Especially, Aussie love food, they have BBQ and food party. And Aussie loves competition.

[Finland]
In Finland, the reality and talk show are quite popular.
They are interested in what happens surround and curious about movement of society.
As you know, Finnish people can speak English sometimes even elderly people can speak.
Of this background, they watch TV shows without dubbed when they watch English TV show.
This picture is Finnish TV show. The interface is very simple and it gives us impression of typical modern Finnish design.

[summarize]
through the research about the relation ship "culture and TV show", I found cultural differences are shown as a interface which means subtitle is shown or not and what kind of color do they use. And fashion sense and the music in the show and the way to express their feelings.
And there are some reason as their background whether they have many races or not, the location of the country.
And what kind of government system do they have. And I found it`s difficult to find certain special culture from each country.
Actually, we can find some trend still now. But, in the future, it will be more difficult to find because of the increasing globalization every year.

  3. I think that the way we watch television has already changed dramatically with the internet, and will continue to do so. Like the way a broadcast is presented to the public. The traditional way of watching tv was to sit down at a given time, of a certain day of the week, to watch the program you were interested in, or suffer through the countless hours of “garbage” programs in order to watch the one you are interested in. With the internet-- and the various services it offers such as netflix, etc.-- you can watch whatever programs you wish, at a convenient time for you. So I really believe that TV will eventually be fully broadcasted from the internet (streamed) and be a lot more interactive than it already is. Then the viewer gets to choose exactly what it wants to watch.

Like this you are able to bypass pesky commercials and not have to suffer through countless hours of bad programs. I think this will reinvent the way publicity is delivered, but also force the channels to create more interesting content and programs in order to stay afloat, especially since you can be a lot more selective with the programs you choose to watch.
Also, the internet gives countless of people the means to reach a public, and you see the raise of a lot of productions done entirely without the need for a broadcaster, and free of pressure from sponsors, etc. This will also offer variety and enhance the competition to the actual broadcasters, and hopefully raise the bar for quality programming.

Do you imply that advertisement will disappeared when you watch TV on internet? Think again. Those commercials will invades our space anyhow, on internet, off internet, even though we can be selective to what we want to watch from broadcasting channels. Not sure how Netflix works on TV boxset, but apparently if you are using Netflix on internet browser, ads appear and user have to switch them off manually from browser setting. My question is: advertising has always been a lucrative income. How long can Netflix survives without advertising? Just look at Youtube.

    2. No of course it won't disappear, like you said, how else will it survive? But I do believe the model of advertisement you see on regular tv won't be the same as you will see on the internet (such as 10 minutes of commercial breaks, 20 minutes of show, repeat). I was actually focusing more on the fact that it allows for more on demand programming and I do believe that's the future of tv.

  4. Through the feedback, I researched about the same kind of TV commercial. I picked up McDonald commercial, I found it shows also culture differences depend on the country. My part was difficult to give new information to audience. But I found that define the identity is getting to be lost now. This is my research about comparison of McDonald commercial.

  6. Section like TV cultures all around the world was quite nice and interesting. Former professors dealed the subject quite formal way which audience could expect, but anyway their views and themes were pretty nice and interesting. Although the theme 'TV' is really huge part and cause of lack of participants, we, the audience could feel little bit lack of interactions and deficit, but they did a quite good job overall.
